When you roll it (preferably on a hard floor), the red axle joiner is pressed and releases a "chain reaction" in the droid causing it to fling open into battle position as seen below.

It works about 75% of the times when you've got the internals correct (doomed to make building mistakes partly due to corrected instructions {loose pages with corrections} and partly due to complex model) and also got the technique down.
