SweBrick IV - ULV

This was part of the event SweBrick IV, for other things that took place during this event see the general blogg post.

U.L.V. - Ultimate LEGO® Vehicle

This contest, created by Brendan Powell Smith, is about building a vehicle that accelerates with gravity down a steep slope. The vehicle is put to the test through a series of sub-competitions: Durability, speed, distance, jumpability and looks. To read more about this competition see this blogg post.

As far as I know, this was the second time this event was held in Sweden. And like the previous time it was a blast!

Here's the slope with it's parallel courses.

Not as steep this time to save the furniture in the other end of the room.

Lot's of building action. Sofia, Emil, Harri and Johan. Sofia was a skeptic in the beginning and did not intend to participate. Afterwards she demanded another go and was disappointed it would be half a year off. Always fun to convert somebody. ;)

Anki with her contribution Brrum.

Emil busy building his Kitt.

Harri building HumptiDumptie.

Tobbe "weighing in" his WhiteFire. The vehicle must fit in this box. Big Foot got a exemption since it was so ugly with out it's lights.

Tobbes WhiteFire, main weakness was the hub caps that fell off all the time.

Harris Kyckling (chicken), another "vehicle" with an exemption since it's lacking a driver. But it looks so cute and innocent that it was allowed to enter anyways. Harris way of keeping the tradition, last time he built santas sleigh before Christmas and now a chicken before easter.

Emils Kitt.

Sofias Spionskåpbil (espionage van).

Johans Generalen, a brave try to redeem Jar-Jar Binks - but you must never underestimate the incompetence of Jar-Jar!

Johans TieCar. Both Generalen and TieCar had trouble going straight down the slope and steered away or into the wall.

Harris HumptiDumptie. Harri forgot the rule about a driver and had to put one on there when he was already done building. Guess the weak spot! ;)

Ankis Brrum.

Harri was really creative this time and had not less then three vehicles in the competition, this is Rickshaa-a.

Tobbes Big Foot with strategically high center of gravity and unstable construction. Got an exemption on it's size since it was so ugly with out the lights in front and rear. Thanks! :)

Esthetic's round. Emil judging the competition.

Emil unleashes some vehicles.

Big Foot and Kyckling in crumbs.

Big Foot fell over easily despite it's big foot print.

Besides, it fell into billions of pieces, construction points = 0!

Sofias Spionskåpbil had a bad tendency to loose wheels but held up fine in other regards. She blamed Emil for this since she had stolen his design, how ever Emil later changed his design - a fact Sofia did not notice.

However, Emils design upgrades was fruitless since Kitt lost it's wheels almost as often as the Spionskåpbil.

Big Foot crashed with Generalen.

Action shot of HumptiDumptie shwooshing by the tumbling Big Foot. Note HD's driver in mid air. :D

Big Foot in pieces, again.

HumptiDumpties driver smeared all over the floor.

Brrum and Big Foot goes into close combat.

Big Foot in pieces as usual.

Rickshaa-a and Big Foot.

Brrum makes the process short and crushes (!) Kyckling.

When Kitt did not loose it's wheels the chassis fell apart...

Jar-Jar's highlight when Kitt lost both front wheels.

Big Foot and Rickshaa-a in pieces.

HumptiDumptie lost the axe, again.

Brrum has silenced.

Rickshaa-a needed constant repairs, it's designer Harri had left the competition to attend a class reunion instead.

Kitt all over the floor.

Pieces of tape to mark how far the vehicles came.

Big Foot attempts the jump.

Kyckling with out driver was trublesome to measure since everything is measured to the driver. We agreed that the beak should be measuring part.

Sofias Spionskåpbil did not hold up to well to the jump,

Vehicles in scrap.

Emil with Kitt.

Sofia with Spionskåpbil.

Johan with TieCar and Generalen.

Tobbe with WhiteFire and Big Foot.

Anki with Brrum.

Harri with Rickshaa-a, HumptiDumptie and Kyckling.

And now to the questions on everybodys mind: Who won?

Winners in bold, losers in italics.

Looks = points.
Constructions = Parts lost, max 10.
Speed = Number of wins in "head to head".
Distance = Position.
Jump = Distance between jump and driver.

Yes, I know. I still have not answered the question. To do so we need to use some maths that account for podium places and what not. After that this is revealed:

#1 Kyckling by Harri. 45 points. Who could have known? Not Harri anyway who thought I was kidding when I informed him later that night.

#2 WhiteFire by Tobbe, 41 points.

#3 HumptiDumptie by Harri, 38 points.

#4 Big Foot by Tobbe, 31 points.

#5 Generalen by Johan and Rickshaa-a by Harri. 30 points.

#7 Brrum by Anki, 26 points.

#8 TieCar by Johan, 24 points.

#9 Spionskåpbil by Sofia, 21 points.

#10 Kitt by Emil, 11 points. And thus Sofia was happy again.

Things to improve for next time

It took forever to race each vehicle against each other, it would be a lot better to do this in tournament style where the winner goes to the next round. And it might be a good idea to set a limit for the numbers of vehicles per contender if there are a lot of people.

More then ten cars is too many?
